Consultation on social care reform: Expert response

The Institute of Legacy Management has recently responded to the proposed consultation on social care highlighted in the Queen’s Speech earlier this week.

Reform of social care is one of the numerous Conservative manifesto proposals which have either been amended of dropped completely by Prime Minister Theresa May.

Speaking in the House of Lords on Wednesday, the Queen stated: “My ministers will work to improve social care and bring forward proposals for consultation.”

The reform of social care, or so-called ‘dementia tax’ had received significant criticism from a number of industries and legal professionals.

It involved aligning the means test for both home and residential care, taking the value of the property into account, whilst raising the minimum threshold for state-funded care to £100,000.

However, this pledge will now undergo a consultation.

Commenting on this decision was Chris Milward, who had previously expressed his disapproval of the Conservative plans. The chief executive of the Institute of Legacy Management stated:

‘We are pleased the Prime Minister does not appear to be pursuing her manifesto plans for the so-called ‘dementia tax’. We were concerned this policy could have severely affected people’s ability to use their assets as they wish, negatively impacting the finances of charity donors and charities.’
