Industry expert issues warnings on wills

A wills expert is urging the public to seek professional guidance when writing a will.Richard Howard, from Fidler & Pepper Solicitors, has warned of the potential risks when a lawyer is not used to set out final wishes.

The warning from the wills, trusts and probate specialist comes after several occasions where relatives have expressed concern to he and his team regarding the will of a family member. He stated that rather than professionals, online will-writing kits had been used.

Commenting on the importance of writing a will, Richard stated: “Getting a Will is one of the most important things you could ever do, and getting the Will right is of paramount importance.

“Why? Because if it is not set out correctly, or the wording does not meet the regulations, then it might well be meaningless. If it does not take into account a number of different issues, then it could be challenged successfully.”

He went on to highlight the risks of a ‘quick-fix’ will, drawing attention to the potentially negative consequences which could occur later down the line.

“Sometimes, Wills are even given out as a free gift when people buy financial products. What might look like a great thing to start with, could lead to complications afterwards.

“Not only will people miss out, they could also be left with heavy legal and tax burdens too.”
