Solicitor Who Specialised In Protecting Elderly Clients jailed for wilful neglect

A solicitor who specialised in protecting elderly clients has been jailed for the wilful neglect of her own mother.

Last month, Emma Jane-Kurtz was convicted of one count of wilful neglect after Cecily Kurtz was found dead at their home in Didcot.

Whilst the body of her mother had been discovered in squalid conditions, the former Court of Protection solicitor told the court that she would never have neglected her intentionally. Instead, she said that the lack of assistance sought was because Cecily had begged her not to seek any.

SHaring her views on the case was Kirsty Allman. The Senior Crown Prosecutor for Thames and Chiltern Crown Prosecution Service said: “The investigation established that she had suffered from mental illness for many years and hadn’t been seen by others for a period of 10 years before her death. She had suffered unimaginably and died in the most undignified manner.

“It is rare to come across a case that involves such sheer and blatant neglect against a vulnerable, elderly woman, by someone who was supposed to love and care for her.

“This has been one of the most shocking and sickening cases of neglect I have come across. We have worked closely with Thames Valley Police since this investigation was launched and as a result of the hard work and diligence of the prosecution team, a just outcome has been achieved for Cecily.”

Kurtz has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison.
