Solicitor who specialised in protecting elderly clients convicted of wilful neglect

A solicitor has been convicted of the wilful neglect of her mother after she was found dead in their Didcot home.

Following a two-week trial, Emma Jane-Kurtz was convicted of one count of wilful neglect against her mother Cecily Kurtz.

After a report of the 79-year-old’s death in 2014, Thames Valley Police visited the property. Medical crews expressed a great deal of concern surrounding the condition of both Cecily and the property, with the mother being found dead on the sofa in squalid conditions.

In April 2017, Kurtz was charged via postal requisition.

Despite the nature of discovery, Kurtz, a Court of Protection solicitor who specialises in elderly care, denied the allegations, telling the court that she would never have intentionally neglected her mother.

She stated that the reason for the lack of medical and psychiatric assistance was because Cecily had begged her not to seek any.

Since 2015, Kurtz worked for Boyes Turner, setting up trusts and deputyships for those with and without capacity respectively.

She is due to be sentenced late this month, as well as potentially having to face a Solicitors Regulation Authority investigation.
