Law Society releases guidance on GDPR

The Law Society has released a guide for law firms on the soon to be implemented General Data Protection Regulation.

Ahead of the May 25th deadline, Chancery Lane has released a set of checklists for professionals on a range of different matters, all of which aim to assist and help firms comply with the new regulation. These include topics such as awareness, communication of privacy information, the rights of the individual and consent. Alongside each checklist, all the points include a contextual overview as well as other related information for firms to consider.

Despite the guide being a helpful resource for professionals, data protection experts from the Society recently joined a senior figure from the Information Commissioners Office at a conference, warning firms that “following a template is not necessarily going to guarantee that you are going to meet the requirements.”

According to the Gazette, policy and engagement officer at the ICO, Richard Nevinson, stated at the Law Society conference that the regulation is principles-based “with not necessarily a right or wrong answer”. He said that “Even as the regulator we won’t have all the answers on day one.”
