Industry figure breaks world record

Well-known industry figure breaks world record in death-defying fundraising adventures.

Having been used as a human shield in the Gulf War, Colin Blears is no stranger to standing up to the toughest challenges life can throw at him. His most recent adventures show just how far he is prepared to go in order to pledge his support for a good cause.

Both in his working and personal life, Colin has experience in a range of diverse areas including digital solutions, mortgage fraud prevention systems as well as strategic relationship management. Having worked with high-profile organisations such as HMRC, Land Registry and Experian, Colin founded RISQ Ventures with Jonathan Upton and Tony Turck, in a move to re-align his work and life balance. From here, he invested in multiple businesses and start-ups – his most recent being Terrafirma.

Although Colin had always had a keen interest in embracing new experiences. 2015 was when he decided to embark on the challenge of a lifetime. He took part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht race, sailing 6,300 miles for the 5th leg of the race from Australia via Vietnam to China.  Upon returning to the UK he took the opportunity to develop the new Estatesearch™ product by RISQ before leaving for New York to take part in the homecoming leg of the Clipper Race sailing across the Atlantic to Derry, Den Helder and finally home to London.

Earlier this year, Colin decided to go a step further. Deciding to try and break a world record, Colin and three other adventurous crewmates took on the Atlantic crossing speed challenge, attempting to row from Europe to South America in under 50 days. Despite never having rowed before, Colin became determined to undertake the challenge when a fellow clipper alumni proposed the task to him on Facebook.

Given the harsh conditions and severe mental and physical pressure posed by the row, the challenge was not to be underestimated. Instead of deterring the crew, however, this spurred them on further, inspiring them to utilise the row as an opportunity to raise money for good causes.

All charities are especially important to the team in some respect. The funds donated so far have gone toward supporting the Brain Tumour Charity, Prostate Cancer UK as well as the Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice.

Despite completing the row successfully and smashing the world record, taking a break from setting extreme challenges is not an option for Colin. His seemingly endless determination can be illustrated in his plans to run the Goretex Transalpine in 2017, completing 8 marathons in 8 days whilst covering 4 countries. Although testing his own personal ability, Colin’s main aim is to inspire others when he’s putting his body through extreme conditions, as well as raising money and support for incredibly worthy causes.
