Britney Spears Legal Battle To Remove Father As Sole Conservator

Britney Spears Legal Battle To Remove Father As Sole Conservator

There has been lots of publicity and a social media movement in a bid to help Britney Spears appoint someone other than her father Jamie in the position of her Conservatorship, as she attempts to gain control over her life.

Conservatorship is when a guardian or protector is appointed by a court to manage the life of someone due to physical or mental limitations.

In Britney Spears case, her conservatorship was put in place in 2008 after she suffered a public breakdown in 2007. For 12 years, it has been overseen by her father, giving him control over much of her personal life, career and estate.

Last week, Britney’s lawyer Samuel Ingham III, filed a document in Los Angeles Superior Court, in which it stated:

“This is a voluntary conservatorship. Conservatee wishes to exercise her right to nominate a conservator of the estate.”

This is a follow up document to the one filed by the solicitor in August in which it stated that Ms Spears was “strongly opposed” having her father as her conservator.

There has been a huge public outcry as Britney fans attempt to create a movement to oust Jamie as Conservator as they believe he is taking advantage of his daughter and damaging her quality of life by trapping her.

The #FreeBritney movement has one petition with more than 100,000 signatures, which claims:

“Her father doesn’t allow her to drive, all of her calls & messages are monitored, she’s not allowed to vote, hang out with anyone or spend her money without permission. And if she breaks a ‘rule’ he threatens to have her kids taken away.”

In response to this movement Jamie has said he is tired of hearing rumours that he is exploiting his daughter.

According to The Los Angeles Times, solicitors for both Britney and her mum Lynne filed court documents which outlined that Britney is “substantially unable to manage his or her financial resources or to resist fraud or undue influence.” As such Britney is now seeking to put Bessemer Trust, a financial management company in charge of her estate. This would see them control her finances as well as hold the power of attorney for her medical health decisions and music career.

That case is due to be heard on 10 November.

However, there is more controversy as Britney’s younger sister Jamie Lynn, who was made a trustee of Spear’s estate 24 months ago, is now attempting to gain more control over her assets. She is requesting that the assets are moved into an account with a company that she is a custodian of.

This debacle has obviously rankled Britney Spear’s fans and the #FreeBritney movement continues to gather momentum.

However, the latest saga has incurred the wrath of music legend Cher, who took to social media to say:

“She Worked Hard, Was The Golden Goose, Made Lots Of Money, Got Sick, Now She’s The CASH COW. Does anyone Who’s Making Money Off Her Being Sick, Want Her Well!? Someone Who Doesn’t Want Anything From Her Should Look Into Her Dr & Her Meds….Is It A Duck!?”
